MEDITATION

What is Meditation?


To some it is a quiet walk through the trees while meditating on a problem. To others it is sitting quietly and thinking deeply. While others consider it to be a way to communicate with your inner self and inner wisdom and some think it is a way to communicate with God or Source.

Wikipedia states “Meditation is any form of a family of practices in which practitioners train their minds or self-induce a mode of consciousness to realise some benefit.”


Four Basic Ways to Practice Meditation

  • Follow your breath This is the most universal of all mindfulness techniques.
  • Observe an icon or object Allow your mind to rest lightly on an object.
  • Recite a mantra A mantra literally means "that which protects the mind." So reciting a mantra protects you with spiritual power.
  • Do a Guided Meditation. Guided meditation is akin to guided imagery, a powerful technique that focuses and directs the imagination toward a conscious goal.

Are any of these wrong? No, of course not, each person must experience meditation in their own way.


Why Meditate?

Recent research on meditation has shown that meditating twice per day for about 20 minutes can actually reduce blockages in your blood vessels, significantly lowering the risk of sudden death by heart attack or stroke.


Mind research has suggested that what you want in life, whether it’s abundance, career success, health, happiness or enlightenment, lies in a particular state of mind.


Scientists call this the Alpha and Theta brainwave frequencies. You attain these states of mind during deep sleep and also during meditation.


Brainwaves

Beta - waking state, the five sense, perception of time and space.

Alpha - light sleep, meditation, intuition. No time and space limitation.

Theta - Deeper sleep and meditation.

Delta - Deep sleep. You are unconscious at Delta.


You can use meditation to overcome limitations and challenges, triumph over unwanted habits and negative thought patterns and enrich certain aspects of your life helping you gain abundance, success, health, happiness and enlightenment.


Millions of people around the world, including doctors, entrepreneurs, artists and celebrities, use meditation to improve their lives in many inspiring ways.


What is the Correct Position to Meditate. 

People often wonder what is the correct way to meditate. Should you sit cross legged on the floor as in the picture or lay out flat on the floor? Could you go for a walk and meditate? What about sitting in a chair or laying on the bed? You can of course meditate wherever you feel comfortable.

Personally I prefer to sit in a chair with my feet flat on the floor and my hands facing upwards resting on my knees. However, there is no right or wrong way to meditate.


Whichever way you choose to position yourself is fine.


A Special Place

Find the right place for you to meditate. If you are in your own home, ask others not to disturb you. Some people create their own special area at home specially for their meditations.


Low lighting helps to create a relaxed mood for meditation, so many people turn off their electric lights and light candles instead.


Burning incense or a scented candle can also help the ambience of a room or space.


Some people prefer quietness, while others like gentle relaxing music playing softly in the background. But it is important to turn off the phone and any other equipment, allowing no interruptions.


Many people find it best to wear loose clothing.


The temperature of the room should not be too hot or too cold.


You may prefer to be outdoors in a wood, sitting on a beach or high on a hill, if so make sure that you do not get cold.

How Long should you Meditate


It is usually recommended that you meditate 15 – 20 minutes each day, morning and night.


If you are just starting to meditate I would suggest 5 minutes each time.


How to Meditate


Some people prefer to meditate alone, while others like to join a group. I personally feel that group meditations are stronger, although I also meditate alone.


When you start to meditate it is important to 'open' yourself to spirit and when you're finished to 'close down' the connection and ground yourself.


Even if you are in a group, the group leader may do this for the group but you are always responsible for yourself. See the meditation below for an example of how to do this.


It is a good idea to have a cup of tea and something to eat after meditating.


Group Guided Meditation


Don’t worry

· if you cannot manage to meditate the first time.

· if you see nothing—all senses are used during meditation.

· if you drift off during the meditation - this means you weren't meant to hear (for whatever reason)

· if you feel that everyone else got it and you didn't - you got what you needed at the time

· if you finish the meditation before the others, just sit quietly and see if you can sense the energy in the room

· coughing, sneezing or crying can be embarrassing, but don't worry, this can be a sign of energy shifting

· the group leader should be responsible about the group energy, with grounding etc, If you're not sure please ask, or try a different group.
